46. A 22 ft vessel with 2 PoB was reported via Solent CG some 0.25 NM south of Splash Point at anchor having suffered engine failure. The lifeboat arrived on scene at 14:25 to find the vessel anchored from midships beam on to the 1m swell and shipping water. The occupants were unable to recover the anchor or connect the tow so the 2nd Coxswain was put aboard to assist. A tow was established during which there was cause for concern for the elder casualty who was recovering from a recent medical condition. An ambulance was therefore arranged to meet us on arrival. The vessel was placed alongside the marina fuel berth at 15:20 and both persons were checked over by the ambulance crew.

45. Solent CG requested that we launch to assist a 12m MFV with a fouled propeller just over 1NM west of Newhaven. The lifeboat was alongside the casualty at 17:35 and once the anchor was recovered a tow was established. The vessel was towed to Newhaven and placed alongside the marina fuel berth.

44. A 15m fishing vessel with 2 PoB some 15 NM SW of Newhaven had suffered water pump failure with her gear still partially down. A sister vessel also with 2 PoB had gone to her assistance but after passing a tow this vessel suffered con rod failure and was only able to tow at 2 knots. The lifeboat arrived on scene at 03:43 and started to tow both boats in line astern at about 6 knots. At 04:15 the tow between the two fishing vessels parted so a new wire tow was re-connected at 04:41. Having made prior arrangements on the way in we were met at 07:08 1NM west of Newhaven by another sister vessel. The tow between the two MFV's was slipped and the third MFV took up the tow of the casualty having first off loaded the trailing fishing gear. The two crippled MFV's were then towed into harbour.

43. Solent CG had received a report of an upturned sailing dinghy off the beach at Flagstaff Point. The lifeboat was on scene at 14:00 and the dinghy was found upside down on rocks under the cliffs. The lifeboat commenced a search upwind for possible persons in the water whilst Birling Gap CG made their way down to the vessel. When they reached the dinghy Birling Gap CG found sails and gear lashed down confirming the belief that the dinghy had been set adrift possibly from a local beach. The lifeboat was stood down at 15:03.

42. A member of the public reported to Solent CG that a 2.5m RIB with 2 PoB was overdue having last been seen the previous night and the car and trailer still at the launch site. The lifeboat launched to carry out a search off Seaford Head whilst Newhaven CG mobile went to search from ashore. When on scene a RIB matching the description was seen and closed. The occupants confirmed that all was OK and explained that they had returned ashore the previous night but put to sea again before the member of the public spotted their car.

41. Newhaven Port Radio reported to Solent CG a 25 ft yacht some 5-6 NM SSW of Newhaven taking in water and with engine failure. The lifeboat arrived on scene at 20:55 and once alongside the yacht it was established that the ingress of water had ceased. A tow was established and the vessel taken to Newhaven arriving at 22:00. On closer inspection in the harbour it became clear that the engine failure and water ingress were in fact connected being the result of a leak in the coolant system.

40. A 15 year old boy with special needs had gone in to the sea by Newhaven and Seaford Sailing Club in an attempt to commit suicide. The lifeboat arrived on scene to learn that a police officer had entered the water and recovered the boy who was taken to hospital by ambulance. The lifeboat was therefore stood down at 19:37 and returned to Newhaven.

39. Launched at the request of Solent CG to search for a 3m RIB with 1 PoB last seen at 11:00 and now overdue. En route the lifeboat was requested to recover 1 person reported cut off by the tide before starting the search for the RIB. The lifeboat arrived on scene and started a close inshore search from Splash Point towards the Cuckmere river. During the search Newhaven CG mobile on scene at Splash Point reported that a 3m RIB with 1 PoB had landed on Seaford beach. It was soon confirmed that this was the overdue boat and the owner confirmed it had been him on the beach under the cliff as well. All resolved the lifeboat was stood down at 18:22.

38. Solent CG requested that we launch to assist  a 27 ft powerboat with 6 PoB having suffered gearbox failure 800 m off Peacehaven and unable to anchor. The lifeboat was on scene at 12:27 and a tow was passed. The vessel was towed to Newhaven Marina.

37. The lifeboat launched at the request of Newhaven CG Station Officer to assist with the recovery of an 18 ft vessel beached in Seaford Bay arriving on scene at 16:31. The 4 PoB had been assisted ashore by Newhaven CG. A tow was passed and at 16:35 the vessel was towed off the beach. The casualty was towed to Newhaven where it was placed into the care of Newhaven CG in the marina.

36. A mobile phone call was received by Solent CG from a 19 ft open speedboat with 2 PoB at anchor 0.25 NM south of Saltdean having run out of fuel owing to a faulty gauge. The lifeboat was alongside the casualty at 14:00 and due to the age of the owner (83) a crewmember was put aboard to assist with the tow. The vessel was towed to Newhaven where it was taken to the marina slipway.

35. Shortly after closing down from an exercise at sea we received a report that a 30 ft yacht was sinking 100 yards south of Newhaven and Seaford Sailing Club with 3 persons in the water. The lifeboat was on scene at 13:55 and only the top of the vessel's mast was visible. It was established that the 3 persons had been recovered aboard a speedboat and landed at Newhaven Marina. The vessel was later recovered up the beach by Newhaven CG.

34. A report had been received by Solent CG of a windsurfer thought to be in trouble 1NM south of "The Buckle" in Seaford Bay. The surfer was located just 1 cable offshore and recovered with his gear. The casualty was found to be suffering extreme exhaustion and was rested before being landed into the care of Newhaven CG on the beach.

33. A 28 ft catamaran with 1 PoB reported that she was aground inside the West breakwater, had suffered machinery failure and required assistance. The Newhaven CG mobile had also been despatched and when we arrived a CG Auxiliary had managed to board the casualty from the breakwater. The Y boat was launched with 2 crew aboard. A tow was established from the Y boat which towed the vessel into deeper water. The casualty's engine was restarted and it made its' own way into the marina escorted by the Y boat and ALB.

32. We were requested by Solent CG to launch to assist a 22 ft angling boat with 3 PoB 9NM SSW of Newhaven, the vessel having fouled its' propeller with its' own anchor cable. Whilst we were attempting to recover the anchor the cable parted. A tow was established and the vessel was moored in Newhaven Marina at 04:00.

31. The owner of a 6m RIB loaned to 6 divers reported to Solent CG that the vessel was 2 hours overdue and no communications had been received. Whilst the lifeboat was searching known wreck areas off Newhaven a local MFV reported sighting the RIB off Seaford Head. The lifeboat found the RIB under auxiliary power making 3 knots, the main engine having run out of fuel. 5 divers were taken aboard the lifeboat and one crew member with portable VHF radio put aboard before the vessel was towed to Newhaven and berthed in the marina.

30. We launched to assist a 6m dive boat which was anchored 10 NM SE of Newhaven having suffered electrical failure with 6 PoB. On arrival on scene we were requested to recover the dive shot line as it represented a danger to navigation having air tanks suspended below the marker buoy. 5 persons were taken aboard the lifeboat and one of our crew put aboard the RIB with portable VHF radio before we recovered the shot line. The vessel was taken in tow at 10:48 and berthed in Newhaven Marina at 11:55.

29. Solent CG requested we launch to assist a swimmer believed to be in trouble off Birling Gap. Shortly after leaving the side we were informed that Birling Gap CG had recovered the person from the sea and we were therefore stood down.

28. Solent CG received a mobile phone call from the 14 ft open boat broken down off Newhaven. There were 3 PoB and they were unsure of their exact position. The casualty was contacted by mobile phone and the lifeboat was conned onto their position. The 3 PoB were taken aboard the lifeboat and one crew member was put aboard before the vessel was towed into Newhaven.

27. Whilst on exercise off Hope Gap we were requested by Solent CG to recover a body that had been spotted by the Police Helo. The body was recovered with the assistance of Birling Gap Safety Boat and landed at Newhaven into the care of Sussex Ambulance Service.

26. A 20 ft vessel with 6 PoB was reported to Solent CG having suffered engine failure close to shore in Seaford Bay. The lifeboat was alongside the casualty at 17:45. A tow was established and the vessel was berthed in Newhaven Marina.

25. Solent CG received a report from a 9m MFV with 2 PoB having suffered engine failure 0.5 NM east of the CS1 navigational buoy, some 14 NM south of Newhaven. The lifeboat was alongside the casualty at 12:10 and the vessel was towed to its berth in Newhaven.

24. A report was received from Newhaven CG of two teenagers in canoes having difficulty in adverse conditions at the inner harbour entrance. The lifeboat was on scene at 18:07 and heaving lines were thrown to both canoeists. Both teenagers and their canoes were recovered aboard the lifeboat and taken to our berth where Newhaven CG and Sussex Police explained the dangers of their actions to them.

23. Solent CG requested that we launch to assist a 5.5m dive RIB with 5 PoB having suffered engine failure 4NM west of Beachy Head. The lifeboat was on scene at 13:02 and 4 persons were taken off the RIB before the tow was connected. The vessel was towed to Newhaven and berthed at the marina.

22. A 9m MFV with 2 PoB was reported to Solent CG in the traffic separation zone near the Greenwich light vessel with a fouled propeller. The lifeboat was on scene at 12:39 and a tow was established. The casualty was towed to Newhaven at 6-7 knots. The tow was released at 15:28 and the casualty made its own way the short distance to their berth.

21. A mobile phone call had been received by Solent CG from a 16 ft boat with 2 PoB at anchor off the East Pier at Newhaven with machinery failure. The lifeboat was alongside the casualty at 02:16 and recovered the anchor and connected a tow. The vessel was landed at the marina fuel berth.

20. Solent CG received a mobile phone call from the skipper of a 5m powerboat with 7 PoB broken down off Peacehaven. No actual position was given and the VHF radio could not be used. The vessel was located by radar as it had no lights. The lifeboat was alongside at 23:01 and 6 persons were taken off the casualty and one of our crew members put aboard before the vessel was towed to Newhaven.

19. Dover CG requested we join a search being carried out some 12 NM south of Beachy Head for a person overboard from a ship. Eastbourne ALB, Coastguard Rescue Helo India Juliet, HMS Lindisfarne and the car ferry MV Dieppe were searching when we arrived on scene at 04:00. The body was sighted from MV Dieppe and recovered by HMS Lindisfarne's RIB before being taken aboard the warship. Coastguard Rescue Helo India Juliet was requested to airlift the casualty to hospital.

18. A member of the public reported an object thought to be a body 50 yards east of the western breakwater at Newhaven. With Sussex Police and Newhaven CG mobile on scene the lifeboat was conned on to the object which turned out to be a coat just below the surface.

17. Whilst returning to station from the previous service we were informed by Solent CG that Brighton ILB was towing a 9m sailing vessel with 3 PoB into deeper water off Brighton Marina. Owing to the weather conditions Brighton ILB requested that we take over the tow when available. We rendezvoused with Brighton ILB and the casualty 1.75 south of Roedean at 16:00. Brighton ILB recovered their tow line and transferred our paramedic crew member to the casualty before recovering their own crew. A tow was established to Newhaven during which a further report was received of a yacht thought to be in trouble in Seaford Bay. Our paramedic requested an ambulance to meet us on arrival as the 3 persons on the casualty were suffering from sea sickness and dehydration. The 3 casualties were landed into the care of the Sussex Ambulance Service at 17:10 at which point it was established that the yacht in Seaford Bay had safely reached Newhaven harbour.

16. Solent CG informed us that a 5.5m RIB some 7 NM SE of Newhaven had 2 divers overdue in what had become adverse sea conditions. The lifeboat was on scene at 14:50 with Coastguard Rescue Helo India Juliet. The divers were sighted on the surface at 14:56 and two crew members entered the water to assist them. One was recovered onto the lifeboat, the other was helped onto the dive RIB. Both were found to be suffering from sea sickness. As a result the second diver was transferred to the lifeboat for treatment. The lifeboat was proceeding to harbour with the RIB when we received another tasking from Solent CG. The lifeboat then made all speed to Newhaven keeping in communication with the RIB which made its' own way back to harbour. The 2 divers were landed at our station and the lifeboat left the side on service again at 15:45.

15. At 11:12 whilst at anchor on exercise we were informed by Solent CG that a mobile phone call had been received from a 6m MFV with engine failure drifting 500 m from the east pier at Newhaven. The lifeboat was on scene at 11:20 and the vessel with 4 PoB was towed to Newhaven Marina.

14. Reports had been received by Solent CG of a glider thought to be in trouble very low over Newhaven. The lifeboat carried out a search for some 3-4 NM east and west of the datum established 1 NM south of Newhaven breakwater. Coastguard Rescue Helo India Juliet and Newhaven CG auxiliaries also searched the coast but nothing was found. The search was called off at 13:34.

13. Solent CG received a Mayday call from a vessel with 6 PoB with a fouled propeller 0.5 NM south of Beachy Head. When the lifeboat arrived on scene at 15:20 the Birling Gap Safety Boat was alongside the casualty and had freed the propeller. The casualty was therefore able to make its' own way back to Eastbourne marina and the lifeboat was stood down.

12. Newhaven CG reported a 27 ft cruiser with 5 PoB having suffered a broken drive shaft dragging her anchor 0.5 NM south of Saltdean. Arriving on scene at 11:23 a tow was established and the vessel was berthed in Newhaven marina.

11. Solent CG informed us of a report of an inflatable object being blown offshore in Seaford Bay possibly with a child on board. The lifeboat was on scene at 13:52 and the inflatable was recovered but there was no sign of a child. A search was carried out, during which both the lifeboat and Newhaven CG Mobile tried to ascertain whether anyone on the beach had further information. Eventually at the eastern end of the bay two children reported having lost the inflatable from the beach. All confirmed well we were stood down.

10. A report was received by Solent CG of a dog having fallen from the cliffs near Splash Point and the owner having swum to it's position and now unable to reach land with the injured dog. The owner was extremely distressed and hypothermic. The lifeboat launched at 21:24 and reached the scene at 21:27 when the Y boat was launched with 3 PoB. Having assessed the weather and beach conditions the Y boat was anchored and veered in to the shore. The dog was found to be in a very poor state and the owner distraught. In an operation made difficult by the weather conditions and the poor state of the dog and owner, they were evacuated from the beach by Y boat and both were transferred to the ALB together with our paramedic. Owing principally to the condition of the dog the ALB made all speed to Newhaven to be met by ambulance and vet. The Y boat with remaining 2 PoB made best speed to harbour. Unfortunately the vet was unable to save the dog's life and the owner was taken to hospital by ambulance. As the Coxswain's service report concluded "a difficult and complex service".

9. Launched to assist a 21 ft angling boat with gearbox failure 5NM SE of Newhaven. We were alongside the casualty which had 4 PoB at 06:58. A tow line was passed and we towed the casualty to Newhaven marina where we handed it into the care of Newhaven CG.

Persons cut off by tide
8. Solent CG requested assistance in the recovery of two teenagers and one dog cut off by the tide under cliffs at the west end of Peacehaven. When the lifeboat arrived on scene the Y boat was launched with 3 PoB and was directed to the scene by Newhaven CG. The casualties were transferred in two trips from the beach to the waiting CG on the undercliff walk after which the Y boat was recovered at 16:19.

7. Newhaven CG requested lifeboat assistance after a dog had been reported falling over the cliff and seen to be alive in the water. On scene the Y boat was launched at 14:35 with 3 PoB to conduct a search under the cliffs as directed by Newhaven CG at the top. Despite an extensive search nothing was found by 15:30 so the Y boat was recovered. The body of the dog was recovered at low water by Newhaven CG.

6. During the previous service we were informed by Solent CG that clothing had been found at the top of the cliffs at Seaford Head. Newhaven CG and the ALB were asked to conduct a search of the base of the cliffs which commenced at 13:25. Newhaven CG soon sighted a body and conned the ALB and Y boat to the position. Body was recovered by 4 crew into the Y boat and the body and inflatable were brought aboard the ALB before our return to station where the casualty was handed into the care of Sussex Police.

5. A passing cabin cruiser reported to Solent CG that 2 persons were cut off by the tide under the cliffs at Seaford Head. The lifeboat approached the position and when on scene the Y boat was launched with 2 crew aboard. The 2 persons were recovered from the base of the cliff and taken back to Seaford beach, where they had come from, aboard the Y boat. Before we left the beach the ALB and Y boat were retasked as above.

4. We were informed by Solent CG that a 28 ft cabin cruiser had run out of fuel 2.5 NM SW of Newhaven and had requested assistance. On arrival a tow was established and the vessel was towed to Newhaven and put alongside the visitors' berth in the marina.

3. Whilst still aboard the lifeboat from the previous service we received an urgent VHF call from Solent CG who had heard a Mayday broadcast from a 16 ft cabin cruiser with 2 PoB taking in water near Seaford Head. We were alongside the casualty at 12:34 with our salvage pump running. The 2 PoB were taken on board the ALB and 2 crew members went aboard the casualty with the suction hose from the pump. The casualty was strapped alongside the lifeboat and slow speed was made for Newhaven as the cruiser was continuously pumped out. Newhaven CG and marina staff were awaiting our arrival and the vessel was pulled straight from the water as soon as we reached the slipway. A major split in the GRP hull was found to be the cause of the leak.

2. The lifeboat was alongside our berth whilst we were carrying out a breeches buoy exercise when Solent CG informed us that a 19 ft powerboat was broken down some 300 yards from the harbour entrance. We were alongside the casualty at 11:32 and towed it to the marina slipway.

1. Solent CG requested we launch to assist a 21 ft RIB 1.5 NM south of Belle Toute with 4 PoB and having suffered engine failure. Lifeboat arrived on scene at 18:41 and secured a tow line before taking the 4 PoB off the casualty. The RIB was towed back to Newhaven Marina and handed into the care of Newhaven CG.
